Project description

There is an urgent demand for ethical and scientifically robust alternatives to animal testing for drug development, which is increasingly being phased. Organ-on-Chip (OOC) technology has emerged as a leading alternative, capable of replicating complex physiological functions in vitro, including drug delivery modeling. Metabolic changes are hallmarks of major diseases, and inadequate knowledge hampers the study of intricate biological processes where metabolic changes are crucial for preventing disease progression. A key limitation of OOC platforms is a lack of integrated non-invasive, real-time metabolic analysis techniques. ChipNMR addresses this with an OOC compatible with non-invasive, real-time metabolic analysis using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). This platform supports longitudinal studies of mammalian epithelial cells in response to various stimuli, such as drugs, probiotics, infections, and T-cell therapy, providing critical metabolic insights. During the SPARK program, we will mature our technology and showcase the intrinsic value and potential of metabolic information obtained with ChipNMR.
